day protesters rally at Anchorage federal building

Rep. Don Young showed at the 2009 rally, no big name speakers are expected at
fake ray bans this year’s event.

Several dozen people lined the Parks Highway, which borders the lake, waving anti Obama signs and other anti big government slogans such as "Impeach Pinocchio."

"How Am I Going to Pay For All This?" read one little girl’s sign. The

Tea party demonstrators swarmed a Downtown corner in front of the Anchorage federal building today as part of the tax day demonstrations playing out across the country. Another rally is scheduled for this afternoon in Wasilla.

Protesters called for smaller government and lower taxes, blasted President Obama’s health care plan and signed a "petition of grievance" against Democratic Sen. Mark Begich. A local florist handed out tea and cookies and "Don’t Tread on Me" flags lined the road as a dog wrapped in an "I didn’t read the bill either" sign barked at honking drivers. ("Want small government; end the war fare state," read one sign.)

Some of the faces, the messages and even the sign wearing dog all mirrored last year’s April 15 protest in Anchorage, but at a fraction of the size.

Sherry Shears, a 30 year Anchorage resident, stood at the corner of 7th Avenue and C Street in a long denim skirt holding a sign that read "The founding fathers were right wing extremists."

Shears was at last year’s rally too and says she’s proud of the tea party label. Government has grown too intrusive and shouldn’t be involved at healthcare at all, she said.

What about Medicare, the federally funded program that provides insurance to seniors, or Social Security? Those are socialist programs, Shears said. "They are sucking the federal government dry, bankrupting the government."

Across the street

A Republican, she supports Medicare but opposes mandatory health insurance which she says will lead to a doctor shortage as well as rationed, more expensive care.

"It’s our duty to take care of those who cannot work. It’s not our duty to take care of those who will not work," Cheverton said.

A man in Ray Bans named Charles, who declined to give his last name, balanced a yellow "don’t tread on me flag" against his ribs. A holstered handgun hung at his waist.

Charles wants a peaceful solution to the country’s woes, he said, but said the problems are reaching a point that "if the ballot box doesn’t work, we may have to go to the bullet box. That’s why we’ve got the Second Amendment."

"There’s going to be a switch that’s going to go on in this country one day where people are going to be willing to fight and die for their own country and their own freedoms if they’re taken away from us," he said.

As protesters waved to passing cars, left leaning blogger and Palin critic Philip Munger made his way through the crowd, polling the demonstrators. What
cheap ray bans do they think of a few prominent politicians? Who did they vote for? How old do they think the planet earth is?

Anchorage mom Tiffany Borges brought her daughters 5 year old Vivian and 2 year old Margaret. Borges went to last year’s tea party protest in the Valley and wants lower taxes.

"What is liberty?" She asked Vivian, who sat in a wagon with her sister.

"Freedom from being controlled by other people," the girl replied.

"I agree," Borges said.

Among the protest signs today:

"Tax spend brings the end"

"Jason Levin is a pinhead. We feel sorry for his boyfriend."

"The Constitution: Try it, you’ll like it"

"Beluga, the other white meat" (Presumably a reference to the whales’ listing as endangered and/or talk of designating critical habitat for belugas in Cook Inlet.)Articles Connexes:
